2014 28 June: Midsummer Charity Ball
On a mild sunny evening the Farol da Guia, by kind permisson of the Marinha Portuguesa, was the delightful setting for the Midsummer Charity Ball. The seed of the idea started last year when four local societies, the International Women in Portugal, Royal British Club, Royal British Legion and Women's Royal Voluntary Service, combined their efforts to embark on this ambitious event of bringing the community together for an evening of entertaiment and to raise funds for local children's charities.
The evening started with drinks in the garden overlooking the Atlantic with guests being entertained by the velvety strains of Sandor Mester a classical guitarist. Guests then passed through the silent auction before being welcomed by Angela French, Chairwoman of WRVS. She explained that all funds raised during the evening would be donated to CERCICA Livramento, an educational centre for intellectually and physically handicapped children and young people, to provide a much needed hoist and chair to enable staff to assist the children in to the pool so they can receive vital exercise and hydrotherapy.
Following dinner David Inglis took to the floor as auctioneer of the live auction where he skillfully engaged the guests' enthusiasm to bid generously and competitively for the lots on offer, which ranged from Michelin star restaurants to a signed Liverpool Football shirt.
Barbara Flynn, President of IWP highlighted the fact that events like this don't just happen and the evening was a culmination of a vast amount of work and wanted to extend thanks to all of the organizations and individuals who had contributed in a myriad of different ways to create such an enjoyable and successful evening.
With everyone's fervour boosted there was a final opportunity to, hopefully, place the winning bid on an item in the silent auction where thanks to the generosity of members of the societies and local businesses there were in excess of fifty items to bid on.
The final amount raised in the course of the evening was an amazing €6000, which far exceeded the organising committees initial expectation and will enable us to provide not only the hoist and chair but other essential items which will further enhance the lives of the children at Cercica.
DJ John Player Special brought the venign to a lcos as guests danced till the small hours, taking the oportunity to cool down with a selection of ice creams donated by Ola.
