Welcome from RBCGS Captain
And to the Royal British Club Golfing Society
Members of the Royal British Club who play golf can also join the RBC Golfing Society. The Society is an integral part of the RBC and is open only to members of the Club. It organises regular tournaments for members and also matches against other societies. Provided they hava a valid handicap, golfers, both ladies and men, of all levels are welcomed.
Membership of the Society is an excellent way for golfers new to Portugal to make friends in the local golfing scene.
The Society has been in existence since 1974. Its home course is Estoril Golf Club and that is where most of its events are held.
The Society caters well for the social side of golf. The lunches or dinners that follow every event are very popular and both former golfers and non-golfer partners of members can become non-playing members of the Society and enjoy these convivial occasions.
Every month except in January and August there is an individual Stableford competition for a trophy presented by a sponsoring company. These are normally played on the first Wednesday of the month. Members may freely invite guests to play although guests are not eligible for the official results of the tournament and the same guest may not be invited more than twice in any one year.
Other popular features of the calendar include:
- A fun event, such as a Texas Scramble, every August, which is open to all members.
- An annual match, which has been played every year since 1988, between teams from the RBCGS and from the golf society of the Associação de Barmen de Portugal.
- The annual three-way Tri-Society match between teams from the RBCGS, the Tagus Golf Society and the PINGS, a group that had its origins as the golf society of NATO in Portugal.
The full Calendar for the year and Competition Reports on recents events are available under the respective sections.
There is no fee for joining the RBC Golfing Society. Members pay an annual subscription which is currently set at 40 Euros for a player, 25 Euros for a playing partner and 10 Euros for a non-playing partner/member.

The Club Captain
Semi-retired from a career in banking, I now, with my wife Miranda, divide my time between our home in London and our house in Malveira da Serra.
We are well-travelled expatriates, having left my native Yorkshire in 1976 for Canada, where I studied and Miranda worked, at Western Ontario Businesss School, then joining Lloyds Bank International and spending the next 25 years overseas. We lived in the US, Europe and Latin American, including 9 years in Brazil, which is where we started playing golf, before returning to the UK in 2001. Since leaving Lloyds ten years ago I have kept working part time, mostly in banking and investment. Among a variety of charitable and voluntary activities I was Chairman of Canning House, the Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian organisation in London until 2009 and was honoured to be made an OBE in 2000 for services to the British Chamber of Commerce in Brazil of which I had also been Chairman.
Having first come to Portugal with the bank in 1988 Miranda and I soon decided that this was a place we would return to so before we moved on in 1990 we bought the land in Malveira where we eventually built our house.
We have been members of the Estoril Golf Club and the RBC Golf Society since 2000.
