Welcome to the Club
The Club Captain
Semi-retired from a career in banking, I now, with my wife Miranda, divide my time between home in London and our house in Malveira da Serra.
We are well-travelled expatriates, having left my native Yorkshire in 1976 for Canada, where I studied, and Miranda worked, at Western Ontario business school, then joining Lloyds Bank International and spending the next 25 years overseas. We lived in the US, Europe and Latin America, including 9 years in Brazil, which is where we started playing golf, before returning to the UK in 2001. Since leaving Lloyds ten years ago, I have kept working part time, mostly in banking and investment. Among a variety of charitable and voluntary activities, I was Chairman of Canning House, the Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian organisation in London until 2009 and was honoured to be made an OBE in 2000 for services to the British Chamber of Commerce in Brazil, of which I had also been Chairman.
Having first come to Portugal, with the bank, in 1988 Miranda and I soon decided that this was a place we would return to, so before we moved on in 1990, we bought the land in Malveira where we eventually built our house.
We have been members of Estoril Golf Club and the RBC Golf Society since 2000.
The Royal British Club Golfing Society was founded in 1974 at their home club of Estoril Golf Club. Once a month, normally the first Wednesday, a stableford competition is arranged followed by a convivial lunch.
Everyone is welcome, the only criteria on joining being that they are Members of the Royal British Club. Any number of guests may be invited, but we do stipulate that the same guest is only allowed twice a year.
The annual cost of joining from, January to December, is €40 for a player, €25 for a playing partner and €10 for a non-playing partner.
The regular monthly competitions are usually sponsored by local companies and reported in the local press and Angloinfo. Currently we are supported by:

Another popular feature of our calendar is the annual match against the Barmen’s Association of Portugal. Visitors are always welcome whenever they come on holiday and are looking for a game. Finally a TRI-SOC competition is organised once a year, between the Tagus Golfing Society, The RBCGS and a Team formally from NATO here in Portugal known as the PINGS. Each Society takes it in turn to arrange the following year’s event.
Welcome to the Society, we look forward to seeing you on the course.
